Victims of human trafficking
The UK and Scottish Governments are committed to taking action against human trafficking. The UK Government ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings [pdf 480KB] in 2008, and its provisions came into force across the UK on 1 April 2009.
The Convention aims to:
- Prevent and combat trafficking
- Protect the human rights of victims of trafficking, and in particular design a framework for the protection and assistance of victims and witnesses
- Promote international co-operation.
The UK and Scottish Governments jointly launched the UK Action Plan on Human Trafficking [PDF 450KB].
The Scottish Government is working with the police and other agencies to provide support to victims of human trafficking. More information about human trafficking is available here.
